Before washing your crochet blanket, check the care instructions on the yarn label. If you don’t have it any more, or if you’ve simply received a handmade blanket without any labels, try to find out what fiber it is made of.

If your blanket is made from wool or other delicate fibers, it will need to be hand washed. Acrylic yarn can be machine washed and even tumble dried, but if you don’t have specific instructions which say so, don’t risk it. Hand wash it instead.

To hand wash your blanket follow these steps:

  1. Use mild detergent or soap designed forhandwash sign
  2.  delicate fabrics.  If you are washing a baby blanket, make sure that you are using a dedicated baby detergent. If the baby has sensitive skin or you are giving a blanket as a gift, look for   fragrance-free, plant-based or chemical-free hypoallergenic liquid detergents.
  3. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, as these can damage the fibers in your blanket and cause skin irritation.
  4. Definitely wash the blanket in cold water. Fill a tub with cool water and add a small amount of detergent.
  5. Place the blanket in the water as loosely as possible and gently press down to submerge it. Don’t work it very hard as it can stretch or be damaged.
  6. After soaking for a bit, drain and refill the tub with a fresh batch of water. Gently press the blanket to remove any excess detergent, and then rinse it thoroughly again.
  7. After rinsing, gently squeeze out excess water. Don’t wring out the water because this can damage the fiber.

  8. Finally, lay the blanket out flat to dry on a rack or clean towel. Hanging can stretch or deform it, so don’t.

These steps will help you keep your crochet blanket clean and in good condition for years.
