15-Minute Snowflake Free Crochet Pattern

There’s something magical about crocheting snowflakes — tiny stitches coming together to form delicate, frosty lace. Using just a small amount of thread or lightweight yarn, you can create a beautiful snowflake in no time — ideal for ornaments, garlands, gift wrapping, or even festive table settings. Materials needed:

Cotton thread – use any you have on hand, size 8, 10, or 20.

crochet hook corresponding with your thread (usually 1.25 mm – 1.65 mm)

tapestry/yarn needle

scissors  

Terms and Abbreviations:

MR = magic ring

St(s) = Stitch (es)

Ch =  Chain stitch

Sl st = Slip Stitch

Dc  = Double Crochet – yarn over, insert into the required stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop.  Now, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Dtr = Double Treble Crochet

The pattern is written in US terms. 

Pattern Instructions

FOUNDATION RING

MR or 4Ch. 

ROUND 1:

3ch (counts as 1DC), DC in the ring, ch4, *(DC2, ch4) – repeat from * 5 times, sl st with the beginning ch3. [12 DC, 24 chs]

ROUND 2: 

Sl st to the nearest Ch1 space, Ch3, DC3 in the same space, Ch5, *(DC4 in Ch1-space, Ch5) – repeat from * 5 times, sl st with the beginning ch3. [6 times: DC4, Ch5-spaces]

ROUND 3:

*(Sl St throughout 4dc and into the next ch-5 space. Into the Ch4-space: Ch7, sl st, Ch11, sl st, Ch15, sl st, Ch11, sl st, Ch7, sl st. Sl St throughout 4dc and into the next ch-5 space.) – repeat from * 6 times.

Wave in.  Fasten off.

This pattern needs stiffening and blocking. I stiffen it firmly, which allows me to freely form the shape and hold it. To block the snowflake after stiffening, spread the snowflake evenly. Works best if you have a divider, such as the Snowflake Blocking Template .

After soaking it in the stiffener, I spread the snowflake as far as possible by pinning every tip on the template. To get nice symmetrical snowflakes, make sure that every tip of the 6 longest arms has the same length, which means is pinned to the same circle on the template.
