I designed the heart in 3 different sizes: mini, midi and maxi. Each of those can be made by beginners; I simplified the instructions to make it as easy as possible. If you want to make a bunch of them (for your kid’s every schoolmate) you will be surprised how easy these patterns are to memorize!
My magic hearts measure from 1 ½” to 3”. Your preferred heart size will probably depend on the project you plan to use it for, e.g. if you have a very small valentine’s card from the Dollar Store or Dollarama, you will go for the tiniest crochet heart possible.

Magic Heart in less than 2 minutes Free Crochet Patterns
Each of my 3 crochet heart patterns are based on a magic ring. It may sound overwhelming if you are a newbie, but there is nothing to worry about.
A magic ring (also called a magic circle or an adjustable ring) is an easy technique to make a circle with no visible hole inside. It is widely used when making a circle for potholders, doilies or when starting a granny square. A magic circle is an irreplaceable technique for amigurumi toys, allowing the center to be very tight, making all inside stuffing invisible and ensuring a neat and professional finish. To make it easier, I will give you photo instructions on how to make one.
How to Crochet a Heart, Step by Step
Step 1 To start your project, gather the following supplies.
Materials Needed:
- Yarn – you can use any yarn, but bear in mind that different weights will affect the heart size. I used Super Saver Red Heart Solid in Pretty N’Pink – it’s a worsted weight yarn (medium 4)
- Crochet hook: I used size I- 9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Step 2 Start with a magic ring.

Step 3 Jump to the pattern for the size of heart you want.
Pick the pattern size according to your needs.
The Easiest Crochet Heart Pattern Ever – easy small heart pattern in mini size for a 1½” (4 cm) wide crocheted item. The pattern is made only from 3 basic stitches – double crochet, single crochet and half double crochet stitches. This size will be ideal for adding a touch of love to small projects like embellishments for the Valentine’s cards, for the keychains or earrings.
Magic Heart Free Crochet Pattern in Less Than 2 minutes – pattern in midi size to make a 2” (5 cm) wide crocheted heart. Perfect for beginners, this pattern uses basic crochet stitches (single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, half double crochet stitches) and a simple construction method based on a magic ring to create a charming heart.
It’s a versatile pattern size which can be used to make crochet heart appliqués for baby clothes, or embellish home decors. Perfect for other projects e.g. crochet heart bookmarks.
Magic Heart Crochet Pattern in maxi size for 3” (7.5 cm) wide crocheted heart. This pattern is based on the Magic Heart in midi size, extended by one round of half double crochet stitches.
I will put the midi size first, as it is a base for the bigger heart as well.

Abbreviations:
• Ch = Chain
• Sl St = Slip Stitch
• Tr = Treble Crochet
• Dc = Double Crochet
• Hdc = Half Double Crochet
• Sc = Single Crochet
• St = Stitch
• Sts = Stitches
Start with a magic ring (see the tutorial above), ch 2.
Next make all the following stitches into the magic ring:
2 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 ch.
(Congratulations, you are more than a half way through 🙂
Now the left side of the heart:
2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, ch 2, sl st in the magic ring.
Ch 1 and cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.

Round 2:
Sc in ch 2 space of Round 1.
Next in the following chains of round 1:
3 hdc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts
Hdc, ch 2, hdc into ch 2 space
Hdc in the next 3 sts, 3 hdc in the next 2 sts,
sc into ch 2 space, sl st.
Ch 1 and cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.
The Easiest Crochet Heart Pattern Ever: Magic Heart in Mini Size
Start with a magic ring (see the tutorial above), ch 2.
Next make all the following stitches into the magic ring:
2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, ch 1, sl st.
Ch 1 and cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.
