Hi! Since Christmas is all about tradition, I love returning to lacy snowflake ornaments to give my home an old-fashioned vibe. Today, I wanted to create something I could place on the dinner table or even use as a cutlery holder during Christmas dinner. I tried to make something subtle and elegant that would match my other Christmas decorations.
A long time ago, I made snowflake ornaments that I used as linen napkin wraps, but this time I needed something smaller and simpler to hold a three-piece set of utensils.

Materials needed:
Cotton thread – use any you have on hand, size 8, 10, or 20.
For this snowflake, I highly recommend using a sparkling or metallic yarn, such as Aunt Lydia’s Metallic Cotton Crochet Thread.
I’m usually not a fan of metallic thread when making regular snowflakes, as it can be harder to work with and sometimes interferes with the delicate structure. But for this openwork snowflake, it’s just perfect!

Terms and Abbreviations:
MR = magic ring
St(s) = Stitch (es)
Ch = Chain stitch
Sl st = Slip Stitch
Dc = Double Crochet – yarn over, insert into required stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop. Now you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Dtr = Double Treble Crochet
The pattern is written in US terms.
Foundation ring:
Ch6, sl st to the last chain to form a ring.
(Alternatively start with a MR, but don’t tighten it fully if you are planning to add a button/pearl inside).
Round 1st Ch 1, 12 sc in ring. [12 sc]
Round 2nd: Ch 1, *(ch 7, sl st in the 5th ch from the hook for picot, ch 3, sc in the next sc, ch 6, sc in the next sc) – repeat from * 4 times, ch7, sl st in the 5th ch from the hook, ch 2, 1 dc in Ch 1 from the beginning.
Round 3rd: *Ch 8, skip 1 loop, sc in the next loop, repeat from * all around ending row with ch 4, 1 dtr
Round 4th: **(Ch 11, sl st in 5th ch from hook for picot, ch 6, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, ch 8, s c in 8th st from hook, * ch 5, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, ch 1, s c in base of opposite picot, repeat from * once, ch 6, sc in next loop) repeat from *** all around, join with beginning.
Fasten off.
This pattern needs stiffening and blocking. I stiffen it firmly, which allows me to freely form the shape and hold it. To block the snowflake after stiffening, spread the snowflake evenly and pin it overnight. You may print and use the Snowflake Blocking Template to spread and pin it evenly.
