Step 1: Pick a Blanket Type

First, choose the style of your blanket. Your options are:

• Classic: Perfect for designing traditional granny square blankets.
• Round: Helps you plan the color sequence for any circular blanket or mandala.
• Circle-to-Square: Ideal for designing blankets made from squares with a circle in the middle, such as the Sunburst Granny Square, African Flower Square, or Daisy Granny Square.

Step 2. Configure Your Blanket’s Structure

• For Classic or Circle-to-Square blankets, use the Dimensions section to set the number of rows and columns.
• The Rounds per Square (or Center Circles + Squaring Rounds) defines how many color slots will appear for you to fill.
• For a Round blanket, simply choose the total Number of Rings.

Step 3. Choose Yarn Palette

You can browse dozens of popular yarn palettes by brand to find the exact yarn you're using.

If you don’t have a specific yarn in mind, the "Color Themes" offer beautifully curated palettes to inspire you.

Step 4. Select Your Colors

Simply click the yarn swatches you love or hold and drag them to the color slots below.

To change a color you’ve already placed, first click on its color slot (the input box), then click a new swatch from the palette.

Step 5. Generate Your Blanket

Click the “Generate Blanket” button to see your design come to life! The generator will create a unique layout based on your settings.

Step 6. Save Your Design

To come back to your color design anytime, click "Share/Save Design". A unique link to your blanket will pop up on the screen - copy it and paste it in a safe place. You may for example:

• paste a link to a text editor,
• sent it in a massage to yourself,
• open a new tab, paste the link and bookmark the tab

Next click "OK" to close the pop up window.

Step 7. Even more options

Don’t stop there! Use the buttons and checkboxes to perfect your creation:

• Shuffle / Re-generate: Don’t like the first layout? Click this to instantly rearrange the colors and squares into a new, random pattern.
• Allow duplicate colours: Check this box if you want to allow the same color to appear more than once within a single square.
• Add monochromatic squares: Want some solid-color squares mixed in? Check this box, and the generator will randomly make some of the squares a single color.
• Add Border: Add a finishing touch by checking this box and picking a border color.
• Print Design: Get a printer-friendly version of your blanket design and color summary, perfect for taking to the yarn store!

Choosing colors can be the most exciting and the most intimidating part of a project! I always questions choices I made - are the color combination harmonious enough? There are a few good methods to compose a color pallete you 'd love. Here is how to do it, using my generator.

Start with These No-Fail Methods

Method 1: Copycat the color palette

Find a crochet project in the colors you love or get inspired by nature. Scroll my Crochet Yarn Palettes Gallery for spring flowers, birds, landscapes, and finished blankets that already work perfectly together. Screenshot what catches your eye, then match those colours exactly in the generator — or pick similar shades from your favorite yarn brand.

Here is an example of a color combo I love made by frank.and.rosie with Stylecraft Special DK yarn in Storm Blue, Duck Egg Hint of Silver, and White:

To generate a blanket with the same colors, pick the Stylecraft Special DK color palette from the generator, and drag colors you love into a Round box. When you pick a color, the brand name of it will be displayed to help you pick exactly the hues you want.

After you click 'Generate', you will get a blanket in the colors you wanted with different variations of color setup in each square. If you want to make each square the same, generate only one square (with 1 row and 1 column). Here is how the generated blanket looks:

Method 3 Use the Built-In Generator Palettes:

• The easiest way to start is to use the "Load a Palette" dropdown. The Yarn Brands are the exact colors available from that company, while the Color Themes (like "Autumn Warmth" or "Ocean Breeze") are professionally curated combinations that are guaranteed to look good together.

Method 4 Use the Color Swatches to Pick the Colors by Your Own:

• Let the Yarn Do the Work: Pick a variegated, self-striping, or "cake" yarn that you love. Use that as your "hero" yarn. Then, pull 2-3 solid colors directly from the shades within it to use as your other rounds and a potential border. This creates a perfectly coordinated look automatically.

What's the difference between "Allow duplicate colours" and "Add monochromatic squares"?
